National Nurses Week is celebrated on May 6-12 of each year. The event was started originally to celebrate the
birth of Florence Nightingale (considered to be an early founder of modern nursing). Eventually the weeklong celebration was
designated a nationally observed event in February of 1974 by President Richard M. Nixon. Every year on the same week
in hospitals, medical centers, nursing homes and senior care centers, nurses are honored for their care and dedication to
their profession. The event even extends to US nursing schools and their mist recent graduates.
